About Us

FinCap works with 200 financial capability and budgeting services in New Zealand to reduce financial hardship of people, whānau and communities in New Zealand.

We work with these services to build the capability and professionalism of Financial Mentors and to reduce the causes of financial hardship.

FinCap is funded by the Ministry of Social Development as part of their Building Financial Capability initiative.

Our vision

People, whānau and communities living free of hardship.

Our mission

We reduce financial hardship by developing and supporting New Zealand’s free financial capability and budgeting services and advocating for system-level change.

Strategic goals 2020 to 2022

  1. Develop and support free financial financial capability and budgeting services to deliver high quality, client-focussed outcomes and raise awareness of their value.
  2. Build the capability and professionalism of financial mentors.
  3. Lead and contribute to system-level changes to reduce the causes of financial hardship.

A cornerstone of our service is Financial Mentor training. We offer a comprehensive introductory course for new Financial Mentors and regular professional development.

We’re committed to making sure Financial Mentors are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to provide safe and effective outcomes for clients.

FinCap administers a purpose-built Client Management System which is available to all budgeting and financial capability services to use. Client Voices was developed to support services in managing their clients budgeting information and is capable of producing valuable reports on a local and national level.

We collect and analyse data at a national level, to inform good decision-making and ensure resources are where they are most needed.

Budgeting is a sensitive topic for most people and we understand that it requires high levels of trust from clients. FinCap sets high standards of practice for budgeting services to ensure the safety and wellbeing of clients.

We provide a strong voice to the budgeting and financial capability sector to communicate advice to government and creditors.

Whether it’s an official hui or a simple get-together, we support services in coming together to share knowledge and talk about how to do things better. It is our belief that local services need to support each other for the benefit of clients.

FinCap develops strategic relationships with other organisations in the budgeting and financial capability sector for the benefit of local services and their clients. We aim to make it easier for services to work with these organisations to bring about better outcomes for clients.
