Board Member
Mel is an accomplished senior leader with more than 24 years in the public service and strong governance record across the NGO sector. Her governance contributions span youth development, housing, education, employment and health. This reflects a sustained commitment to strengthening systems, improving quality and enabling long-term community wellbeing. Mel brings a deep expertise in building partnerships, leadership, organisational stewardship and kaupapa-driven decision-making.
In her recent General Manager role, she led strategic engagement across industry, government, iwi and stakeholders to influence system settings and ensure the vocational education system delivers on its promise for all learners. Her leadership is characterised by strong relational capability, and a disciplined focus on outcomes that advance equity and improve access to opportunity.
Throughout her career, Mel has championed initiatives that build capability, strengthen communities and address structural barriers. She is recognised for her ability to navigate complexity, steward relationships with integrity and lead collaborative approaches that create enduring impact. Her governance experience is underpinned by a values-based approach, a commitment to accountability and a clear understanding of the responsibilities and disciplines required of effective boards.
With proud heritage in the villages of Sinamoga, Alesia and Vaivase-Tai (Samoa), she resides in Wainuiomata with her husband and two children. Mel remains deeply committed to kaupapa that empowers people and supports communities to thrive.
